On a motorway or fast road

  1. Leave at the next exit or services if you safely can.
  2. If not, stop on the hard shoulder or in an emergency area (orange SOS signs), as far left as possible, hazards on.
  3. Get out on the left, away from traffic, and wait behind the barrier — not in or in front of the vehicle.
  4. Stuck in a live lane or anyone in danger: call 999. For non-emergencies, National Highways is on 0300 123 5000.

In a tunnel

Hazards on, switch off the engine, and follow the tunnel's emergency signs. Use the emergency phone so the tunnel operators know where you are — then call us once you're out.

At night or in bad weather

Keep sidelights and hazards on, wear something bright if you have it, and stay well away from the carriageway. Keep your phone charged — our booking link drops a pin so you don't need to describe where you are.

Then get recovered

Call us or drop a pin: you see a fixed price straight away and the nearest truck is sent to your exact spot.

Questions

Should I stay in my car on the hard shoulder?

No — get out on the side away from traffic and wait behind the barrier, unless it's unsafe to do so.

What if I can't get out of the live lane?

Keep your seatbelt on, hazards on, and call 999 straight away.
